Evil AI : a new horror thriller about new technologies
Sometimes a good idea can lead to a quality film. But other times, even a good initial idea cannot save a work from failure. This is clearly the case Evil AIa horror film directed by Chris Weitz. After having directed it, among other things For a boy (2002), At the Crossroads of Worlds: The Golden Compass (2007) and Twilight, Chapter II: Temptation (2009), without forgetting the cult comedy American Cake (co-directed with Paul Weitz), the filmmaker has thus launched himself into a completely new genre. With this film, he offers a horror thriller anchored in our times where digital assistance software is increasingly widespread.
As the title suggests, this is about Evil AI Froman artificial intelligence that becomes evil. Initially used to simplify a family’s life, taking care of ordering groceries or finding activities for children that would help parents in their daily lives, the machine will soon become a bit invasive. Programmed to improve family life, artificial intelligence will make worrying decisions and will go even further with children…
In the same genre, M3gan (2022) was also interested in our use of new technologies and the evolution of artificial intelligence. In this case, it is a robotic doll designed to help a child grieve because he has become too protective and dangerous. Again, an interesting idea to exploit for a horror film. Only if M3gan has convinced the press (98% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) and the public (180 million dollars at the worldwide box office), and a spin-off is already in preparation, Evil AI It hasn’t generated this much excitement since its theatrical release.
Negative feedback from press and public
In fact, after its first weekend in North American theaters, Evil AI only collected $4.4 million in revenue. A fairly low score, even though its budget is estimated at only 12 million dollars (Blumhouse production). The film could therefore manage to be profitable in the coming weeks. But for now, the feedback is quite negative. In the United States as in France, for that matter.
ON AssignedThe average viewer rating, based on 128 reviews to date, is fair 1.9/5. It’s getting a little better Rotten tomatoes with 50% positive opinions from the public. From the press side, however, the vote drops to 19%. Among the criticisms of the press, it is worth mentioning that of Soon who writes about the film: “Evil AI is so bad I almost wish it was written by an AI“.
John Cho and Katherine Waterston fail to save this film that will not go down in history. If you still want to make up your own mind, it is worth discovering The AI of Evil in French theaters from August 28th.
