Ultimate Game is set on Netflix France

Ultimate Game (Player in original version), a dystopian action thriller starring Gerard Butler, has just made its debut on Netflix France and has already entered the Top 10 of the most viewed films on the platform. Released in 2009, the film did not cause much of a stir when it was released in theaters, but it is now known a new life on the streaming service.

Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, Ultimate Game catapults us into a near future where technological advances allow players to control humans in a life-sized video game. Gerard Butler plays Kable, an inmate who participates in one of these deadly games, called Huntresses. Controlled by a teenagerKable must survive a series of fights ultraviolent broadcast live to millions of viewers. If he wins three more times, he wins his freedom and becomes the crowd’s darling. But it soon becomes clear that the game’s creator, Ken Castle (played by Michael C. Hall), has other plans for him.

A box office failure

Gerard Butler, already known for his muscular roles in films such as 300here he plays a hero on the brink of the abyss, forced to fight for his own survival. His performance, intense and physical, is one of the film’s strong points. Kable’s character is both a relentless fighter and a father determined to regain his freedom and his family. Michael C. Hall, famous for his role in Righthe plays a disturbing, visionary and Machiavellian antagonist.

When it was released in 2009, Ultimate Game had struggled to find its audience, with mixed reviews and a disappointing box office. With an estimated budget of $50 million, it only grossed $40 million at the worldwide box office. When it opened in French theaters, the film drew only 200,000 admissions.
