Dune : the science fiction saga of the moment
From the failure of Dune (1985) by David Lynch, some thought that Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel was an impossible work to adapt to film. However, in 2021, Denis Villeneuve he proved the opposite with his first part Dune. Worn by Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista and Zendaya, the film was a success, grossing over $407 million worldwide. Solid numbers if we take into account the Covid pandemic. In addition, the sequel Dune 2 (2024) has nearly doubled that figure, with over $711 million raised.

Since the first film, Warner Bros. has shown its ambition to offer a great saga. Even before the release of the second film, the third film was mentioned. It was therefore expected that the studio would develop a trilogy. But it could be the case even after Dune 3which does not yet have a release date, other feature films could see the light and allow us to go even further into the universe.
Other films after Dune 3 ?
It was Denis Villeneuve himself who gave this information during his intervention in the podcast Little Golden Men From Vanity FairThe director clarified that he had initially thought Dune as a diptych, with two films adapting Frank Herbert’s book. The third film, which he should develop, will be based on the author’s other novel, Messiah of the duneswhich takes place 12 years after the events of the first novel. Therefore, the director does not really see these three films as a trilogy the third work could therefore be very different.
If I do this third one, which is currently being written, it won’t be like a trilogy. It’s strange to say, but if I go back it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.
Denis Villeneuve added it with Dune 3would like to build in some way the basis for other films. He was thus able to let other directors continue the adventure thanks to Frank Herbert’s other novels (five books were published between 1965 and 1985).
It would be a good idea for me to make sure that with Messiah there are the seeds of the project if someone wants to do something else later. Because they are beautiful books. They are more difficult to adapt. They are becoming more and more esoteric. It is a little more complicated to adapt, but I will not close the door. I will not do it alone, but it could happen with someone else.
For now, Warner Bros. has not announced any other films. After all, the studio will already be delving into the universe of the small screen the series Dune: Prophecy which will take place 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides and will focus on the Bene Gesseri. The show will begin in November on Max. Below the trailer:
