Quentin Tarantino, first fan ofUnbreakable

Unbreakable fits majestically into M. Night Shyamalan’s filmography. A dark superhero film starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, it reveals a disturbing magical realism the story of a man who turns out to be a superhero. Spectacular in its own way, very moving, in aesthetic and narrative continuity with Sixth Sense, Indestructible When it was released in theaters in the winter of 2000, it received rave reviews from audiences and top film professionals, including Quentin Tarantino.

“I think Bruce Willis is absolutely magnificent in this film”

In 2009, the director of pulp Fiction AND Kill Bill lends itself to the ranking game for Sky Movies, delivering its 20 Best Movies From 1992-2009. In reality he gives 19 without hierarchy, in alphabetical order, explaining that the only one that really stands out is Battle Royale. In his list, where we find in particular Speed, Memories of Murder, Hearing, Dogville, concludes with Unbreakablewhich gives him time to express all the positive things he thinks about it and, at the same time, to deal with the marketing (from 5’15 min).

First of all, it’s the greatest performance Bruce Willis has ever given in a movie, I think it’s absolutely magnificent. Secondly, it’s a brilliant interpretation of the Superman mythos.

For me, the film was very obscure when it came out, in terms of the subject matter. I think they (the studios, ed.) put themselves in a difficult position, because the film can be presented with one question, which would have been much more intriguing than their advertising, and that would be: “What if Superman was on Earth?” but he didn’t know he was Superman?”, which is the subject matter of the film, and we only find out about it before… I mean, I think “Unbreakable” is one of the masterpieces of our time.

Quentin Tarantino thus renounces the word “masterpiece”, and we don’t see how to contradict it. Unbreakable It’s a superhero movie that’s as perfect as it is unique in its genre, with emotional power intact more than twenty years after its theatrical release.
