Cillian Murphy Returns

From Oppenheimerwhich consecrated him by allowing him to win theOscar for Best Actor 2024Cillian Murphy has a status to uphold, that of one of the best actors of his generation. And, absent from screens since the release of Christopher Nolan’s film in July 2023, he is so in the drama Little things like this who is making his return, with another great performance in sight (trailer at the top of the article).

Little things like thisdirected by Belgian director Tim Mielants, it is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Claire Keeganinspired by a terrible true story. This is the story of the “Madeleine Convents”, a religious institution founded in 1758 in England, which then spread to various countries around the world. Originally, they were houses dedicated to the reintegration of “women of loose morals”, that is, prostitutes, women who had suffered rape or sexual abuse, or women who showed precocious sexuality.

A historic scandal in Ireland

In these institutions of religious origin, run by nuns, women had to do laundry work, a form of penance to “wash away” their sins. And also an income for the institution… Soon, moving away from the initial idea of reintegrating women marginalized by society, these “convents” or “laundries” moved towards a prison systemwith living conditions similar to or even worse than those of a prison. A phenomenon that has particularly flourished in Ireland, where the last “Convent of the Madeleine” was closed in 1996.

Little things like this tells this story through the eyes of a man, Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy), who discovers the terrible reality of the convent of his city during the Christmas period, in 1985. The images of the recently unveiled trailer give a glimpse of a drama as sober as it is moving, served by great acting performances. Around Cillian Murphy we find in particular Emily Watson, awarded with the Silver Bear for best supporting performance at the Berlinale 2024 for her performance in Little things like this.

Still without a release date in France, fingers crossed Little things like this take one.
