Tempo Music Investments claims the singer copied several elements from 2012’s ‘When I Was Your Man’
Miley Cyrus she was denounced for plagiarism for one of the biggest hits of her career, the song Flowersreleased in 2023. According to Tempo Music Investments, the singer copied several elements of the song When I was your manfrom Brown Marsreleased in 2012. The artist was sued along with his two co-composers Flowers, Gregory Hein AND Michael Pollack.
In the lawsuit, the company argues that “any fan of When I was your manby Bruno Mars, you know FlowersMiley Cyrus, didn’t achieve all this success alone. Flowers duplicates various melodic, harmonic and lyrical elements of When I was your manincluding the melodic tone design and verse sequence, the connecting bass line, some of the chorus lines, some theatrical musical elements, lyrical elements, and specific chord progressions.” Compare the two tracks below:
The lawsuit continues: “It is undeniable, based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings, that Flowers would not exist without When I was your man. With FlowersCyrus, Hein and Pollack created a derivative work from When I was your man without authorization.”
Bruno Mars, however, is not involved in the process. Tempo Music has filed an appeal because it had the right to do so Philip Lorenzoone of the composers credited in When I was your manThe company also names Sony Music Publishing, Apple, Target, Walmart and other companies in the music distribution lawsuit.
Flowers It was the first single from Miley Cyrus’ eighth studio album, Endless summer holidays. It was the most streamed song of 2023, with 2.7 billion streams, broke the Spotify record for most streams in a week, and won two Grammys, for Recording of the Year and Best Pop Performance.
