A comedy dethroned at the box office since 2014
Released in theaters in 2014, What have we done to the Good Lord? tells the story of Claude and Marie Verneuil, a bourgeois Catholic couple played by Christian Clavier and Chantal Lauby, who see their lives turned upside down when their four daughters marry men of different origins and religions : a Muslim, a Jew, a Chinese and a Catholic of Ivorian origin. This clash of cultures and traditions is the backdrop to a series of comic situations in which prejudices, misunderstandings and clichés are used to provoke laughter (even if the film has not failed to create controversy outside our borders).
Upon his release, What have we done to the Good Lord? quickly attracted the attention of the public. The film grossed 12.3 million admissions in France, the 21st biggest box office hit of all time. And for ten years no other French film has managed to compete with a similar soundtrack. Even Artus’ film, Something morewill not be able to beat it (it is currently at 10.5 million, and should close its run around 11 million).
The beginning of a saga
The huge success of What have we done to the Good Lord? quickly led to the production of sequels. In 2019, What else have we done to the Good Lord? the film was born, which reunites the original cast, under the direction of Philippe de Chauveron. The film, which tells the adventures of the Verneuil family grappling with the new challenges related to the intercultural marriages of their daughters, has aroused considerable enthusiasm, but slightly behind the first part.
With 6.7 million admissions in France, the sequel was a notable success, but less than the first film, which had 12.5 million admissions. Despite everything, What else have we done to the Good Lord? first place at the 2019 box office for a French film.
In 2022, a third film, What have we all done to the Good Lord?is out. This part explores a new family dynamic, as the Verneuils prepare to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with genres and their families. This third work has seen a significant decline at the box office, reaching around 2 million spectators in France. The results of this last part, although respectable, show a weakening of the franchise, which has not managed to regain the extent of its initial success, and therefore has not led to a fourth film.
