Franck Dubosc, the dark side
Something is happening in Franck Dubosc’s work, and it is very interesting. Indeed, at 60, the man who made himself a one-man show superstar and a box office hit with ultra-popular school comedies seems to want to flourish today in a more nuanced, more subtle and even more ambiguous register. Proof of this is that his second result, Rumba lifein its conventional guise of a “comedy with Franck Dubosc”, he played the controversial Michel Houellebecq in a cameo and painted the portrait of a mediocre man, wounded and destroyed by his own cowardice, with a surprisingly bitter result.
If everything did not go well and destabilized the historical audience of the comedian turned actor and director – only 290,000 spectators -, Rumba life however, highlighted the “author” profile of Franck Dubosc. Still deep blue eyes, but with a grayer soul and a blacker heart than usual. His new film, A bear in the JuraIt fits into this perspective and could be a superb proposal.
Inspired by the Coen Brothers
But let’s not sell the bear’s skin before killing it, and let’s look at the few documents and facts already exposed. The synopsis of A bear in the Jura is as follows:
Michel and Cathy, a couple worn out by time and financial difficulties, no longer really speak to each other. Until the day Michel, to avoid a bear on the road, hits a car and kills the two occupants. 2 dead and 2 million used banknotes in the safe, obviously makes you want to talk about it again. And above all, keep quiet.
This is a pure presentation black comedyand which will host a real cast. Around Franck Dubosc, in fact, also in front of the camera, we find Laure Calamy and Benoît Poelvoorde, two of the most reliable values of French cinema, as well as Joséphine de Meaux and Kim Higelin. And the director has quite clear ideas about what he wanted A bear in the Juraas he explained in February 2024 to France 3 Franche-Comté.
I wanted to change genres a little bit. To be in a genre that is still comical, but a little darker, more in the humor of the Coen brothers, like “Fargo”… All these movies where you laugh, but at a first level, with characters that are very grounded in reality. I didn’t want a funny comedy, but a serious comedy, a serious comic.
