A story inspired by the “Brabant Killings”
Assassins is partly inspired by a series of true events that shook Belgium in the 1980s: the “Brabant Killings”, also known as the “Wallon Brabant Killings”. Between 1982 and 1985, a series of violent robberies were carried out by a group nicknamed “the crazy Brabant killers”, leaving behind a heavy toll of 28 dead and numerous injured. This mysterious gang, never identified with certainty, carried out brutal attacks, especially against supermarkets, without the motives behind these murders having been fully clarified.
Investigations carried out at the time and still today have not fully clarified the issue, fueling numerous speculations. Some argue that the Brabant massacre could be linked to this Infernal Circlesto extremist political factions or even to security services involved in wider conspiracies.
François Troukens, who himself had a criminal past before rehabilitating himself and becoming a filmmaker, draws freely from these events. The film does not claim to be an exact reconstruction of the “Brabant crimes”, but it captures their essence, in particular through the themes of manipulation, corruption and impunity that marked this dark period in Belgian history.
