Tonight on TV: the French film beats the Avengers at the box office

Dany Boon reunites with Ch’tis ten years later

In 2008, Dany Boon achieved her biggest success Welcome to the Ch’tidirected by him and in which he plays one of the main roles together with Kad Merad. A real phenomenon that has accumulated more than 20 million viewers in France. Even today, the best result for a French film at the national box office is the American one Titanic beating it by a few hundred thousand entries. Repeating such a feat seems difficult, if not impossible. But even without reaching such impressive figures, Dany Boon still made waves, ten years later.

In 2018 the director took us back to the Northern region with La Ch’tite Famille (which is not a continuation of Welcome to the Ch’ti). Inside we find it in Valentin’s skin, a famous architectjust like his partner Constance (Laurence Arné). As they prepare for the opening of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, things get out of hand. Because Valentin has always lied about his origins, not wanting to admit that he comes from a modest background and that grew up in northern France.

Worse, he stated it his mother (Line Renaud) she had abandoned him. Except that she, accompanied by Valentin’s brother, sister-in-law and niece, comes to Paris on the day of the inauguration. Furthermore, an accident will bring him even closer to his origins. Hit by a car and after falling into a coma, Valentin wakes up with amnesia but with everything his past habitsincluding his Ch’ti accent which is difficult to encounter in the bourgeois Parisian environment.

A very personal film for Dany Boon

So Dany Boon still plays on the opposition of environments and entertains by pushing certain clichés to the extreme. All this is at the service ofa thoughtful family comedy with this character rediscovering his values and reconnecting with his origins as much as with his family, especially his mother. Although some journalists did not like the photos used, the emotion conveyed and more present than in Welcome to the Ch’ti it was noticed anyway.

It must be said that Dany Boon stated La Ch’tite Famille how to be his most personal filmand the filming also brought back memories with his parents, as he said in the press kit.

I see myself talking to my mother like Valentin does with Line! I see my father in the character played by Pierre Richard… Also, in the scene where I finally explain to him after all these years, I ended up in tears, so much so that I didn’t hold this grip because it wasn’t editable! The emotion was too strong…
