Miss Peregrine on Netflix: why did the film’s sequel never see the light?

Miss Peregrine: from novel to film

In October 2016, the film Miss Peregrine and the Peculiar Children directed by Tim Burton comes out in cinemas. Adapted from the first novel in the saga Miss Peregrine imagined by Ransom Riggs, is interested in the story of Jacob, a young man who discovers, after the death of his grandfather, clues about the existence of a mysterious world steeped in magic : Miss Peregrine’s House and Peculiar Children. This place, run by a housekeeper who has the peculiarity of being able to transform into a bird, is full of residents who all have a peculiarity and strange powers.

These children, protected and isolated from the rest of the world, live in a time loop that allows them to always relive the same day. Jacob, intrigued by these revelations, embarks on an adventure to uncover the truth behind these mysteries. During his journey he becomes friends with these children and discovers that, just like them, he too possesses a special power. Together they will face formidable enemies and protect their sanctuary.

The film’s cast includes Eva Green as Miss Peregrine and Asa Butterfield as Jacob. Alongside them we can also mention Samuel L. Jackson, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench and Allison Janney.

But where is Miss Peregrine 2?

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the film Miss Peregrine by Tim Burton is adapted from the first volume of the saga by author Ransom Riggs, which has a total of five novels. As with other fantasy sagas aimed at young audiences, one could imagine that other films would follow, but this was not the case. Several elements can explain why there has never been a Miss Peregrine 2 at the cinema, despite the rather positive response from the public and professionals.

Financially, the film certainly made almost double its production cost ($296 million at the worldwide box office), but this figure, while respectable, did not reach Hollywood standards that would warrant a sequel. The box office start, although higher than expected ($29 million), did not live up to expectations given the film’s substantial budget. A strong start is often a key indicator for movie studios when considering developing a franchise (for comparison, a roaring start is estimated to be around $100 million).

Finally, a major external factor was Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. This acquisition may have led to a complete reevaluation of current projects and future productions. With new priorities and new direction, it is possible that a decision will not be made to continue the franchise Miss Peregrine was influenced by this major shift in the cinematic landscape.
