Dawn of the Dead return to the cinema
Today we no longer count films or series involving zombies. But how many have been able to renew the genre with an original proposal? In a comic register, Dawn of the Dead must be positioned above the fray. Directed by Edgar Wrightthe film is the first work of the Cornetto trilogy (with Hot fuzz AND The last pub before the end of the world) and judiciously plays with the codes of zombie films, having fun with the viewer’s expectations to better surprise.
In Dawn of the Deadwe follow Shaun (Simone Pegg), an unambitious thirty-year-old who spends his life with his roommate Ed (Nick Frost) and drinking pints at the local pub when he doesn’t have to work during trading hours. Faced with such passivity, his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) decides to leave him. Depressed, Shaun will spend the evening drinking. But when he wakes up, he will be determined to take matters into his own hands and win Liz back. A small detail will slow him down in his search: zombie. When he realizes what’s happening, Shaun will risk his life more than once. But he can count on Ed to help him save his mother and his girlfriend from this ever-growing army of the undead.

To celebrate 20 years of Dawn of the Dead (released April 2004 in the UK and July 2005 in France), Carlotta and StudioCanal decided to re-release the film in the restored 4K version. It will be (re)discovered in theaters from October 30th.
A masterful comedy by Edgar Wright
More than an Edgar Wright film, Dawn of the Dead it is the first reunion of the trio composed of the director and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It was with the former that the filmmaker signed the screenplay of his second feature film, after working together on the brilliant Spaced series (1999-2001). In this “romantic comedy about zombies”, the authors continue references to pop culture not limited to zombie movies. The British humor works wonderfully, as does the use of cut editing, an Edgar Wright specialty that makes this comedy energetic.
Added to this is the social background, as Carlotta explains in her press release on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the film’s release: “Shaun of the Dead is also a powerful social satire, in which the zombie film becomes a metaphor for Western civilization at the beginning of the 21st century, where the collective has given way to a regressive and inward-looking society.“.
Made on a budget of around £4 million, Dawn of the Dead has accumulated more than $31 million in revenue worldwide. However, the film’s notoriety came later, particularly with the film’s release on DVD. Furthermore, at the time, the feature film had collected less than 130,000 admissions in France. However, the comedy made its mark and even attracted the attention of the zombie film community, George A. Romero. The latter offers Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright a cameo The land of the dead (2005).
