The documentary The Menendez Brothers: Killers or Survivors? reveals fans who use social media to defend criminals
Convicted thirty years ago for the murders of their own parents, Lyle and Erik Menendez won a new hearing, scheduled for November, to evaluate new evidence of alleged sexual abuse committed by the brothers’ father, José Menendez.
“We received evidence. We received a copy of a letter that was allegedly sent by one of the brothers to another family member talking about him being a victim of sexual abuse.”, George Gascónfrom the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, in a press conference last Thursday, October 4th [via Variety].
The new audience, resulting from the popularity of Monsters: Menendez Brothers: Parent Killersa new Netflix miniseries, could lead to a new trial and, who knows, the innocence of the Menendez brothers, something defended by a movement of fans of the criminals on social media.
The documentary The Menendez Brothers: Killers or Survivors? addresses the phenomenon of TikTok users — popularly known as TikTokers — who analyze the history of Menendez and create videos to argue that the brothers had killed their parents, Joseph and Maria “Kitty” Menendezto save herself from years of physical and sexual abuse.
The Investigation Discovery production, launched in 2022, shows how several users of the social network, especially younger ones, popularized Lyle and Erik Menendez on TikTok, initially because of her good looks. Afterwards, other TikTokers began to criticize the brothers’ sexualization and began fighting to prove the duo’s innocence and ask for their freedom.
The Menendez Brothers: Killers or Survivors?which is available at Maxbrings testimonies from these young people, as well as people involved in the case — such as police officers, lawyers and judges —, journalists and experts, who study the behavior of TikTokers in relation to their brothers Menendez.
