Yo Mama: the surprise return on Netflix France
French comedy Hey momreleased in the summer of 2023, it initially did not meet its audience in theaters. With just over 170,000 spectators, the film with a budget of 6.5 million euros was considered a business failurewho are struggling to establish themselves in a summer full of releases.
However, its recent addition to the Netflix platform on October 5, 2024 seems to give it a new opportunity to shine. In a few days, Hey mom ascended to third place in the Top 10 of the most watched films in France on the streaming platform.
Brought to you by Claudia Tagbo, Zaho and Sophie-Marie Larrouy, the film tells the story of three mothers who, after discovering a provocative rap clip made by their 11-year-old children, decide to throw themselves into rap. The goal? Re-establish communication with your childrenthat they feel they have lost. They then made an explosive clip to respond to their children’s, in hopes of re-establishing dialogue within their home.
Against all expectations, their video is a resounding success, but they soon find themselves overtaken by the world of rap, whose codes they completely ignore. The sudden fame of these three friends will then plunge them into a series of unexpected situations, calling into question their identity and their relationship with the role of mothers, but also with fame.
A true story behind the film
Hey mom draws inspiration from a true story. In January 2015, in Sarcelles, a rap clip sparked controversy by showing young people brandishing wads of cash and fake weapons. This clip caused a sensation, becoming the symbol of the negative influence that certain messages transmitted by music can have on young people.
The clip shocked local people and an investigation has been opened for inciting debauchery and supporting crime. This case was heavily criticizedin particular by the deputy mayor of Sarcelles who also wanted to carry out educational work with interested young people.
The film, directed by Leïla Sy and Amadou Mariko, takes this idea to create a story in which mothers, desperate to see their children drifting apart, decide to turn to rap to re-establish communication with them.
