The Predator is a hit on Netflix! Why didn’t the film get a sequel?

Directed by John McTiernan, Predator (1987) is a cult action film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in one of his most famous roles, and in which he faces an equally mythical enemy. The success of the feature film allowed the launch of a saga with a first sequel in 1990. Then, without counting the crossovers Alien vs. Predator (2004 and 2007), we had to wait 20 years before finding the extraterrestrial warrior with Predators (2010). In this fourth work of the saga, which takes place after the events of the first twobut without referring to the third, an alien ship crashes on Earth. A member of a Ranger commando, Quinn witnesses the crash and discovers a Predator helmet and armband in the rubble. Before being arrested by a mysterious organization, he manages to send the items to his home. It is here that his son will unintentionally activate a beacon attracting other Predators. At the same time, one of these creatures recovered by the organization wakes up with the intention of slaughtering everything that moves. Quinn and former soldiers he’ll try to stop it before he finds outanother genetically modified enemy and there is also something more dangerous.

Two sequels were planned

Even before the release of The predator in the rooms, sequels were planned. This was even despite problems during production, with changes to the script leading to reshoots. The feature film aimed to launch a trilogy. Two other films could therefore have continued the adventure with some of the characters introduced here. However, the reception was not what Shane Black had hoped for. The latter had insisted that his film be classify (banned to unaccompanied minors under 17), and certainly thought the tumult of bloody action would attract audiences.

The predator accumulated almost 160 million dollars in turnover worldwide. Barely enough to cover costs given its $88 million budget (a cost generally doubled by the promotion). In addition to an insufficient number of entries, the feature film received many negative reviews. And not just from the press. This general refusal of The predator he therefore convinced the production not to launch a direct sequel to the film. Instead, the saga took another direction in 2022 with Prey. A film set long before the events of the first work, in 1719, and which sees a young Comanche face the most dangerous being in the galaxy. Despite the direct release on VOD (on Disney+ in France), Prey has largely convinced and a sequel should soon see the light.
