Denis Villeneuve persists and signs his radical idea

More chatter for Denis Villeneuve

Having become a filmmaker specializing in “auteur” blockbusters, Denis Villeneuve has delighted audiences First contact, Blade Runner 2049 and his two films Dune. In strong competition with Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve is the other contemporary director to whom the major film companies can confidently entrust their blockbusters. But coming from independent cinema, with highly acclaimed thrillers, Quebec has a singularity. And he recently confided that he would like to do it make a film without dialogue.

Here’s how during the BFI London Film Festivalwhich takes place from 9 to 20 October, that Denis Villeneuve developed this idea.

I like dialogues but, in cinema, not always. I hope that one day I can make a film without the spoken language. I try as much as possible to exploit the power of images.

Even before Dune

Shortly before the release of Dune, part twoDenis Villeneuve stood out harsh words on the same subject. He stated: “The dialogues are for theater and television. I don’t remember films because there is good dialogue, but because there is a powerful image. I don’t care about dialogue at all. Only image and sound, this is the strength of cinema (…)”.

In fact, it is difficult to contradict the director celebrated for his visual competence, who underlines the primacy of image and sound over dialogue, even if only to distinguish the seventh art from theater and television. It was therefore not a simple posture or an indication on how to watch his films, but rather a fixed idea of the filmmaker. A priori it’s not for tomorrow, but let’s hope that Denis Villeneuve realizes this wordless film project in the not too distant future.
