Al Pacino, the regret that lasts
Legendary American actor Al Pacino is currently on tour to promote his autobiography, titled Sonny Boy. And during an interview given to the program Today from the BBC, revealed private disappointment. Huge gangster movie, Scarface it is a masterpiece of baroque and tragic cinema. Brian De Palma directs it from a screenplay that Oliver Stone adapted from Howard Hawks’ 1932 film of the same name. A remake in which we move from Chicago in the 1920s to Miami in the 1980s, and where Tony Camonte becomes Tony Montanaa Cuban exile who will skyrocket up the ranks of the criminal world. As Tony Montana, Al Pacino then delivers a freewheeling performance, all sliders exploding. The exact opposite of the other unforgettable criminal he played: Michele Corleone in the saga The Godfather.
Ultraviolent, deliciously raw, extravagant and endowed with a rare cinematic power, Brian De Palma’s film and its actor are one. Al Pacino’s performance was immediately praised. But the film received mostly negative reviews and its success in theaters ($66 million grossed for a production budget of around 30 million) is limited.
But the film will quickly be reevaluated as new audiences discover it, eventually being considered a cult film and one of the greatest films in cinema history. We can therefore understand Al Pacino’s regret in this regard Scarface which, beyond the great performance of its lead actor, was completely shunned in 1984 by the Academy of Oscars.
