History of the attic : behind the scenes of a cult reality show
At the beginning of the 2000s, the audiovisual panorama was shaken by the arrival of the first reality shows in France: History of the attic (2001-2002). A program adapted from the Dutch show Big Brotherand which consisted of gathering 11 single candidates in a loft and filming them in almost every room and 24 hours a day. Despite numerous criticisms and attempts to stop the show, the public exploded for M6, And History of the attic became a true phenomenon.
In 2024, reality shows are numerous and have evolved significantly. However, the creators and screenwriters Nicolas Slomka and Matthieu Rumani wanted to return to the origins with WorshipPrime Video series which tells the story of the development of History of the attic taking real elements and adding fictitious ones. The series, however, remains very realistic in its depiction of events and close to reality.
David Fincher’s influence on authors
Nicolas Slomka: The starting point was David Fincher’s The Social Network, which told the story behind the scenes of a company that was Facebook. We loved this movie. We told ourselves at the time that this was exactly the kind of project we wanted to write.
It was therefore in 2010 that Nicolas Slomka and Matthieu Rumani began looking for an equivalent subject. If Facebook were “a revolution in United States and around the world“, the two authors had to dig into their memories of adolescence to find something that had a strong impact on France. It was then that History of the attic seemed to be the ideal subject.
Matteo Romani: We thought about Loft Story that we watched when we were 12-13 years old. At that time, we woke up in the morning and watched the summary on Michaël Youn’s Morning Live. There were debates at school, everyone had an opinion. So we started doing research, reading books and interviews about the show and said there was a story to tell.
“An original and surprising subject”
The two authors were surprised with The Social Network to see “a thriller with nervous writing, a very complex character an original and surprising subject“, they approached Worship with the same originality. That is, focusing on behind the scenes rather than the loft itself. Therefore, even if a significant portion is given Loanaplayed on screen by Marie Colomb, the themes of the series are more in-depth the small production team who tries to launch a reality show, the low blows between colleagues, the negotiations with the broadcasters and the direct consequences on French society.
With Anaïde Rozam, César Domboy, Sami Outalbali and Nicolas Briançon in the cast, Culte can be discovered on Prime Video from October 18th.
