Werewolves: French Netflix film available
Announced several months ago, the film Werewolves is available on Netflix from Wednesday 23 October. Adapted from the famous board game The Werewolves of Thiercelieuxfeatures Franck Dubosc, Jean Reno and Suzanne Clément in a halfway adventure Jumanji AND Visitors.
The film directed by François Uzan (Lupine) tells the story of a family who, after discovering a mysterious board game, is transported to a medieval village. There, they must face nightly attacks from werewolves and try to survive as they try to return to their time. Initially disoriented, the family members discover that each of them has a specific gift for their role in the game, and that only together will they be able to defeat the curse and return to 2024.
Netflix is betting big on this project, hoping to attract fans of the cult game The Werewolves of Thiercelieux and fans of family fantasy comedies.
An adaptation that will not be unanimous
Despite a promising initial idea, Werewolves struggles to convince due to disappointing execution. From the first minutes, the visual aspect leaves something to be desired, giving the film a “cheap” impression, with scenes and costumes that are not very credible. The actors, however talented, they seem disengagedas if they themselves didn’t really believe in the project. Jean Reno and Franck Dubosc, who should be the driving forces of the comedy, appear below their usual capabilities, often adrift in a scenario without much originality.
The blend of comedy and fantasy, while appealing on paper, fails to create real chemistry. The film suffers from a predictable plot, with expected twists and special effects that, far from being engaging, weaken the impact of the scenes. Some humorous passages manage to stand out, but they remain largely insufficient compared to what one would expect from such a prestigious casting. In the end, Werewolves fails to fully exploit the potential of the game universe from which it draws inspiration, and risks leaving viewers wanting more. Some have already expressed their disappointment:
