The mystery of the future John Wick
Having become a successful director and one of the leaders of Hollywood action cinema, Chad Stahelski has also become an expert in the art of communication. The John Wick universe, which he co-created and now oversees, has grown so much that the stakes have become very high.
In addition to the 4 films and the series The continental already released, Chad Stahelski in fact has a very popular and very profitable franchise with Lionsgate that is expanding at great speed. After Dancer with Ana de Armas, another spin-off on the character of Cainplayed by Donnie Yen in John Wick: Chapter 4it has been made official. Chad Stahelski is also working on an animated film that is supposed to narrate the origins of the characteras he mentioned in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. With all these different projects, it must therefore be clear and opaque at the same time, not reveal anything while giving some indications… and drown the fish without killing it when it comes to evoking THE project, that of the hypothetical John Wick 5.
John Wick 5 but without its hero? (SPOILERS)
It’s not the first time cinema has brought a dead character back to the screen, but it doesn’t seem to be Chad Stahelski’s idea. Let’s remember, barring an unlikely about-face, John Wick dies of his wounds and his revenge finally accomplished at the end of the fourth film. It wouldn’t be implausible, given that the mythological dimension of the saga is freed from total plausibility, but listening to Chad Stahelski, the end of the story is there, it’s the right one and it won’t change.
We cannot do better than what we have done. It’s the end. It’s the contract. This is what we conclude.
However, the director explains that he and his team are constantly working on ideas for an upcoming film, that “yes”, this film is the subject of a “active development“But it’s like all the other projects, in the name of a pure writing exercise, and there are excellent ideas. He assures us:”in the last three years I have already had three or four versions of “John Wick 5”!“
“We have reached our peak”
But here it is, if it’s a fifth film John Wick is well in development, Chad Stahelski indicates it will not be part of the story developed in the first four films.
We have some great ideas and they wouldn’t be part of the plot of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” It wouldn’t be what you would imagine. If Keanu and I thought it would be a good idea and it wouldn’t just be window dressing, then that would be great. But as far as this story goes, we’ve reached our peak. At least, it is for me. This is my peak. We’ve finished this story, it’s complete. I look at it now and I’m very happy with it, but we wouldn’t try to improve it. We won’t try to add anything else. It should be a completely different story.
We understand it therefore, between the lines John Wick 5 it is a reality as a future “big” cinematographic project. But not in the continuity of the first four films, and without being a new spin-off Dancer OR John Wick: Cain. In other words, it’s a working title for a completely new project. The future of the saga is therefore partly mapped out, with different stories in different formats, but it also remains an attractive element of the unknown and a great creative challenge for Chad Stahelski and his teams.
