Tonight on TV: this comedy attracted 4 million viewers and caused controversy upon its release

Kev Adams as Aladdin

The New Adventures of Aladdindirected by Arthur Benzaquen, is a French comedy released in 2015. This film stars Kev Adams in the role of Aladdin, together with a prestigious cast, composed in particular of Jean-Paul Rouve, Éric Judor, Michel Blanc and Vanessa Guide. The story follows Sam, a young man dressed as Santa Claus who, stuck with the children in the Galeries Lafayette, tells them a modern and unusual version of the famous story of Aladdin.

With a budget of 15 million euros, The New Adventures of Aladdin attracted a large audience, bringing together more than 4 million viewers in France. The film was mainly shot in Morocco, in Ouarzazate.

A success marred by controversy

However, this success was overshadowed by controversies regarding the manipulation of the film’s ratings and reviews on online platforms. At the time of its release, the AlloCiné site came under fire to promote the film’s ratings for the distributorrecording a press rating of 3.2/5, based on just nine reviews. This is an unusually low figure for a film of this stature, which has raised suspicions about the authenticity of the rating.

Equally worrying were the criticisms from spectators. User ratings showed an unusually high percentage of five stars, which reinforced suspicions of review manipulation. These anomalies were broadcast by the media, such as The worldand created a climate of mistrust regarding the way assessments were handled.

In response to these accusations, AlloCiné defended its position explaining that the press approval rating was calculated by a small group of critics (few media outlets had access to press screenings), which could explain the small number of comments taken into account. As for viewer opinions, the site acknowledged that groups attempted to influence ratings, but assured that these attempts had little effect on the final average.

This controversy has raised questions about how distributors can easily inflate viewers’ positive opinions on sites like AlloCiné by posting fake reviews.
