The movie Save or die by Frédéric Tellier was released in French cinemas in November 2018 and was a great success with the public with more than one million admissions. In this drama inspired by true events, Pierre Niney plays Franck, a young firefighter who must relearn how to live when he finds himself seriously burned following an accident.
To prepare for this role, the actor followed rigorous training alongside the Paris firefighters. He did exercises such as board climbing, rope climbing and carrying heavy equipment. This immersion allowed him to understand the physical demands of the profession. At the same time, he worked with a sports coach and a nutritionist, which allowed him to gain about 9 kg of muscle for the first part of the film.
After the accident that happened to his character, Pierre Niney had to lose the muscle mass he gained to reflect the physical degradation of Franck Pasquier. To do this, he stopped bodybuilding and followed a strict dietconsuming only juice for a month and a half. This approach was essential to realistically portray his character’s physical transformation.
His commitment and physical transformation were particularly noted. During a ceremony held in the courtyard of the Invalides, he received a medal and the honorary rank of firefighter first class, in recognition of his work and immersion with the fire department.
