You Won’t Understand My Hate: The Heartbreaking True Story Behind the Film

You Won’t Understand My Hate: From Facebook Post to Movie

You won’t have my hatred it’s not just a personal story, it’s a universal testament to the human ability to resist horror and find a path to inner peace. Antoine Leiris, journalist and writer, lost his wife during the Bataclan terrorist attack in November 2015. A few days after this tragedy, he published an open letter to the attackers on social networks: “You will not have my hatred. » This message of incredible dignity has become a symbol of resilience and has been shared around the world.

A sober and sincere film

In this adaptation, director Kilian Riedhof chooses sobriety and modesty to tackle such a weighty topic. Rather than seeking spectacularity, the film focuses on the distraught daily life of Antoine (played by Pierre Deladonchamps) and his young son, left alone with his father after the loss of his mother. It is through simple gestures, silences and moments of introspection that the viewer glimpses Antoine’s pain, but also his struggle to continue living.

You won’t have my hatred takes a deep and thought-provoking look at the grieving process and the human ability to rebuild oneself. The title, taken from Antoine’s letter, reminds us that hate is never the answer, not even in the face of the most violent injustice. This film, without ever falling into melodrama, invites the audience to think about how everyone can face their own trials and, perhaps, find the strength to overcome the insurmountable.

What happens to Antoine Leiris?

Since the publication of You won’t have my hatred and the global emotion aroused by his letter, Antoine Leiris continued his path of resilience, dedicating himself above all to the education of his son Melvil, who he raises alone. A journalist by profession, he chose to step away from the media scene for a while after the success of his work, preferring a more discreet life to rebuild himself and offer a peaceful environment to his son.

In 2019 he published a second book, Life afterwho looks back with modesty and sincerity on his daily life and how he strives to build a positive future despite the pain. This second testimony, less focused on the initial tragedy, explores the challenges and small miracles of everyday life, the moments of joy shared with her son and the search for normality after the unimaginable. Through this new work, Antoine Leiris shares his journey towards overcoming pain, thus affirming his choice to turn his back on hatred to move forward.

Today Antoine Leiris continues to live with discretion, embodying this dignity and courage that shines through in his writings. Between 2018 and 2021 he was the official “pen” of the Paris city hall for Anne Hidalgo.
