More than ever: Gaspard Ulliel’s latest film
On January 19, 2022, Gaspard Ulliel died suddenly at the age of 37, the victim of a skiing accident in the resort of La Rosière, Savoie. This tragic death shocked the world of cinema and beyond, putting an end to the career of an actor acclaimed for his charisma, discretion and talent. Already awarded with two Césarsparticularly for his role in Just the end of the world by Xavier Dolan, Gaspard Ulliel was one of the most promising faces of his generation.
Before dying he made one last film: More than everdirected by Emily Atef, in which he stars alongside Vicky Krieps. The feature film, presented at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022, was released in French cinemas in November 2022, i.e. 10 months after the death of Gaspard Ulliel.

In More than everGaspard Ulliel plays Mathieu, the partner of Hélène (Vicky Krieps), a woman in her thirties suffering from a rare and incurable disease. The couple, faced with this harsh test, sees their daily life turned upside down. Helene finds out a blog run by a Norwegian who shares thoughts about the end of life and decides to go alone to Norway, to meet this man and seek answers to her inner questions.
Mathieu, although reluctant, agrees to let her go, aware that this search for pacification is essential for Hélène. Through sublime landscapes and a refined stagingthe film explores universal themes: the relationship with death, isolation in the face of illness and love in the face of the inevitable.
For director Emily Atef, Ulliel’s passing changed the reception of her film. During the presentation of More than ever at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, spoke emotionally about the actor’s work and the tragedy of his loss. “She had a unique grace, a sweetness that shines through in every scene,” he confided, underlining the indelible impact of her performance on the film.
The public, for its part, welcomed it favorably More than ever with greater sensitivity, touched by the idea that this film had become the last in the actor’s career. The poetry of Norwegian landscapes and the universal themes addressed in the work found an even deeper resonance, transforming this film into a cinematic farewell.
