Tonight on TV: don’t miss this chilling political thriller

An intrigue at the center of religious and political power

In The Cairo ConspiracyAdam, a young son of a fisherman, receives a scholarship to attend Al-Azhar, Cairo’s most prestigious religious university. But his dream of pious studies soon turns into a political nightmare when an unexpected event occurs: the death of the Grand Imam, the highest dignitary of the institution. Adam is then recruited by an Egyptian intelligence agent to infiltrate the behind-the-scenes selection of his successor.

This starting point serves as a pretext for a story in which questions of faith, corruption and the struggle for power are intertwined.

Director Tarik Saleh, of Egyptian origin but exiled in Sweden, offers a subtle but relentless critique of the links between politics and religion in his home country. The film reveals the functioning of a system in which personal ambitions are intertwined with geopolitical issues.

As the voltage increases, The Cairo Conspiracy fascinates from the first minutes. The viewer is immersed in an oppressive universe where every gesture and every word can have deadly consequences.

A story inspired by reality

If The Cairo Conspiracy it’s not directly based on a true story, it’s deeply rooted in context realistic and documented. Director Tarik Saleh (already working on Cairo confidential) was inspired by the political and religious tensions shaking Egypt, in particular by the complex relationships between the central power and Al-Azhar University, a respected institution, but carefully monitored by the regime.

The director, himself from an Egyptian family, drew on his own experiences to tell his story. He has stated in several interviews that his film is inspired by methods of the intelligence serviceswhich he describes as “ubiquitous” in Egypt.

Although the plot and characters are fictional, the themes – surveillance, manipulation and the struggle for control of public opinion – reflect well-known realities in many countries where freedom of expression is limited.
