Tonight on TV: this French comedy did better than Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean

Dany Boon vs Benoît Poelvoorde

Published in 2011, Nothing to declare is a comedy directed by Dany Boon, also the main actor together with Benoît Poelvoorde. The action of the film takes place in 1993, at the time of creation of the Schengen areawhich marks the end of border controls.

Ruben Vandevoorde (Benoît Poelvoorde), a chauvinistic and frankly Francophobic Belgian customs officer, is forced to team up with Mathias Ducatel (Dany Boon), a French customs officer. This unlikely duo, forced to patrol together in a shared car, creates funny situations and tasty dialogue.

With sometimes absurd, but always gentle humor, the film pokes fun at the cultural stereotypes that separate the two nations. Behind its light-hearted exterior, it also offers a reflection on the absurdity of prejudice and the importance of going beyond clichés to find common ground.

A box office phenomenon

Nothing to declare was a huge success when it was released in 2011. With over 8.1 million entries in France, the film came in second at the 2011 box office, behind the aptly named film Untouchablesand its 19 million entries.

Even if it didn’t reach the record figures of Welcome to the Ch’ti (20.4 million entries), confirmed Dany Boon’s talent for reaching broad audiences with unifying humor.

Nothing to declare has surpassed international blockbusters such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 AND Pirates of the Caribbean: The Fountain of Youthwhich attracted approximately 6.5 million and 4.7 million viewers respectively in France in 2011.
