Passed unnoticed at the cinema, this touching drama starring Meryl Streep is available on Netflix

A gripping plot about morality and suspicion

In 1964, in a Catholic school in the Bronx, Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep), a strict and intransigent principal, suspects Father Brendan Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of touching a young African-American student, Donald Miller. His suspicion, fueled by indirect clues and personal prejudices, turns into an incessant investigation, without tangible evidence.

Adapted from the hit play by John Patrick Shanley, which he also directed, Doubt explores the ambiguities of truth and the weight of the accusations. Between a progressive priest who supports an open Church and a nun attached to authority and traditions, the film stages an intense psychological confrontation.

Thanks to the nuanced performances of its lead actors, Doubt immerses viewers in a reflection on certainty and doubt. Meryl Streep brilliantly plays an unyielding woman, while Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a man ambiguous and complex. Alongside them, Amy Adams and Viola Davis also deliver memorable performances, despite their limited screen time.

Five Oscar nominations, but a discreet release in France

When it was released worldwide in 2008 (in France in 2009), Doubt was received favorably by critics. Its faithful and sober theatrical adaptation, as well as its crafted dialogues have been praised. However, the film was aimed at a smaller audience due to its sensitive subject matter and intimate format.

With a budget of 20 million dollarsthe film generated approx 52 million at the global box office: a decent result, but far from the usual commercial successes. However, it shone in the awards: Doubt had five Oscar nominationsincluding those for Meryl Streep (best actress), Philip Seymour Hoffman (best supporting actor), Viola Davis and Amy Adams (best supporting actress).

In France, Doubt it only garnered 137,000 viewers when it was released in February 2009. Its arrival on Netflix France is a perfect opportunity to (re)discover it.
