The remake of a classic of the genre from the director of Evil Dead Rise
We thought it was permanently abandoned after the failure of the 2017 film, The Mummywith Tom Cruise. But it’s not necessary Never bury a film or idea too quickly in Hollywood. This week, The Hollywood journalist informs us that a new versioncurrently titled The Mummywill see the light.
The screenplay writing and direction were entrusted to Lee Cronin who made a name for himself thanks to Rise of the evil dead in 2023. The fifth chapter of the famous horror series created by Sam Raimi lived in surprising success with audiences and critics all over the world. It grossed $147 million internationally for a modest budget of just $14 million.
Faced with such success, Blumhouse (which recently published Don’t speak badly) and Atomic Monster have decided to entrust him with the reins of The Mummy. With a question that all fans of The Mummy (1999) ask: Will Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz be there?
Blumhouse’s The Mummy, a truly scary version
On X (formerly Twitter), Jason Blum’s production company shared the news in a short teaser revealing the title of the screenplay, accompanied by the following message: ” A Terrifying Thing is coming out in 2026 “.
We can therefore ask ourselves how Lee Cronin’s version will be different from Tom Cruise and Alex Kurtzman’s. This reboot was launched by Universal with the aim of create a dark universe bringing the films of Universal classic monsters from the 1930s. So, and in case of box office success, The Mummy it would have been the first strip of a franchising with other films about the Invisible Man, Frankenstein, Doctor Jekyll and the Werewolf. For this reason, a star skewer had been chosen for the roles: Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe.
However, in the face of the failure of the film (410 million grossed at the worldwide box office for a budget of 195 million) and murderous reviewsthe Dark Universe has fallen apart. Just the movie The Wolf Man by Leigh Whannell with Christopher Abbott was retained by Universal, without being part of the initial project.
For The MummyLee Cronin and Blumhouse had planned to do this hit hard. “ It will be unlike any Mummy movie you’ve ever seen before. I dig deep into the earth to resurrect something very old and very scary “, Cronin warned in a press release. We will therefore be far from the schoolboy jokes of the 2017 version.
The Mummy is expected in theaters in spring 2026.
