The actor made his series debut playing Connell on ‘Normal People’

Paul Mescal confessed that he lied to get his first big role on camera. In an interview with the magazine W Magazine (via People), he stated that he knew how to direct to play Connell in Normal Peopleseries based on the book of the same name by Sally Rooney.

“I said I knew how to drive Normal Peopleand I didn’t know how to drive”, he revealed. “We signed the paperwork, I got the paper, and I forgot to get my driver’s license. So, I ended up acting in Normal People with a provisional license.”

“I could only drive the car with a qualified person next to me,” he said. He continued: “I did the best directing — and we have it on tape — that anyone has ever seen on screen in Normal People“.

The actor also joked: “Now I’m in Formula 1.”

The role in the Hulu series opened the doors to Hollywood for Mezcalwho, more recently, starred Gladiator II. He also starred The Lost Daughter (2021), Aftersun (2022) and All of Us Strangers (2023).
