Gyllenhaal considered the project ‘very controversial’ after hearing one of the songs: ‘You Cannot Do Whatever This Is’, he advised his friend
The actor and voice actor Josh Gad addressed an episode involving his friend and co-star in Love and Other Drugs (2010), Jake Gyllenhaal in her recently released memoir In Gad We Trust: A Tell-Some (2025). “As I went back and forth to do episodes of The Daily ShowI was also filming a project called Love and Other Drugsdirected by Ed Zwick and starring Jake Gyllenhaal“, he wrote Gad. “One day, when Jake and I were returning home from the set in Pittsburgh, I asked him if I could play a demo of a new musical I had recently workshopped in New York, hoping to get his advice on whether I should I go ahead with it or not. He said, ‘Yes, put it on,’ and I played the opening number.”
He says that his friend laughed “a lot” at the track “Hello!“, but his reaction changed as the songs progressed. “I skipped to another track on the album and his face slowly went from joyful enthusiasm to abject fear and terror,” describes the actor.
“He stopped the car and said, ‘Man, you can’t do whatever this is. This is going to be very controversial. Who the hell wrote this anyway?’ I paused the music and looked at him. ‘The Guys’South Park‘.’” The actor, however, chose to continue with the project.
