Amazon is expected to increase Amazon Prime subscription prices in Europe by up to 43%.
On Tuesday, Prime Video subscribers received an email from Amazon informing them that the new pricing will take effect on September 15 and vary by market. UK subscribers were told that price increases for new subscriptions and renewals were due to new products, including several new movies and TV originals, added since the last price increase in 2014.
An email from Amazon told subscribers, “We’ve greatly increased the number of products with fast, unlimited Prime shipping; Added and expanded ultra-fast fresh food delivery; and added high-quality digital entertainment, including television, movies, music, games and books.”
UK subscribers will see their monthly bill increase by 12.5% to £9 ($10.80), while their annual subscription will increase by 20% to £95 ($114). Subscribers in France will pay 43% more at 69.90 euros ($70.74) for an annual subscription, while subscribers in Germany will pay 30% more at 89.90 euros ($90.95).
Amazon Prime, like other US-based streaming platforms, has struggled with higher production costs and talent to develop and produce new movies and TV originals. In February 2022, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy cited “higher costs due to labor shortages and inflationary pressures” as obstacles to the e-commerce giant.
