Marcel and Mr. PagnolIntrospective biographical film of a giant
Sylvain Chomet, designer and director, famous for the unforgettable The full -backs of BelvilleHis new animated film was presented during the 78th Festival Marcel and Mr. Pagnol. A very beautiful story, in which the great author and director Marcel Pagnol has doubled. In fact, aged and at the top of his glory, his past was revisited at the invitation of a publisher of Elle magazine and undertakes the writing of a literary soap. And from the first pages, the child was reappeared from him. A moving dialogue begins between the young Marcel and the academic world, icon of literature and cinema.

Marcel and Mr. Pagnol Obviously he distinguishes himself for his design and animation, but above all for a fine and ambitious writing, exploring the strengths and weaknesses of the character, his relationship with his parents and his art, with celebrities and women, with his native region. Laurent Lafitte lends his voice to Marcel Pagnol, finding the right accent of the regional language dear to the author, and Géraldine Pailhas lends his voice to his mother, Agostino Pagnolo. We met them.
What, in this project Marcel and Mr. PagnolDid you seduce you?
Laurent Lafitte : What is interesting is that when we tell the life of Marcel Pagnol, you enter through his work and his life is equally overwhelming! And I think it is the coherence of very large artists. Sylvain Chomet has put his great talent in the service of this story. And his cinema is very poetic, while differ from Pagnol’s poetry.
All this poem was needed to explain the great legacy Demarcel Pagnol …
Géraldine Pailhas : I heard Nicolas answer a question, declaring that 90% of the film dialogues are dialogues Marcel Pagnol. Nicolas Pagnol, his nephew, was very present. It is one of the most precious interlocutors that we could have for this film. Sylvain Chomet and are very close to him.
What was your meeting with Marcel Pagnol’s work?
Laurent Lafitte : These are my first emotions of the reader. The first novels I read, which were not youthful novels, were My father’s glory AND My mother’s castle. I discovered his cinema later and I took a long time, I had to make an effort to let us enter because it was very different from the cinema that I appreciated then. And I regretted that I wanted time to be sensitive to it … I hope that Sylvain Chomet’s film will save the younger generations this time that I have lost and that they will want to discover this cinema that is very sensitive and poetic, with feelings that are sometimes serious, that go far. It is a cinema that must be rediscovered by young people.

Géraldine Pailhas : I was rapidly attracted to literature as by Marcel Pagnol’s cinema. I come from the region and its landscapes were mine. His characters, his stories, for me they were right in front of my window. I felt like a shared playground. I was 8 or 9 years old, and as Marseille was almost a mandatory passage, you had to know Pagnol’s work. Some have rejected him, but on the contrary I curled up with all my strength.
It was like a romantic indicator, in my way of loving literature and cinema, throughout life. “Pagnolesque” is a word that I often use, to talk about works that refer to memory. For example, The Fabelmans From Steven Spielberg he has a Pagnolo side. These great talent men who revisit their childhood, being able to say details, precise emotions … When you are invited to this type of history, I think there is nothing more magical.
