Drag events have become a hot topic in some parts of the US, but at 90210, a series of drag lunches at the Golden Girls Kitchen, an homage to the classic NBC sitcom, is just the ticket.
The pop-up, an officially licensed party at 369 N. Bedford Drive, presented by events and experiences company Bucket Listers (in association with rights holder Disney), has six venues on the calendar through the end of October, with four already exhausted .
“Drag brunches were the best-selling brunches,” explained Andy Lederman, founder and CEO of Bucket Listers. Four of the show’s characters, Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia, will recreate the drag queens who are expected to sing the show’s theme song, “Thank You For Being A Friend.”
Bucket Listers: a company that partners with event producers, film studios and other intellectual property owners to create and expand unique experiences in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, Boston and more. As an “immersive tribute” to the classic Susan Harris sitcom that ran for seven seasons between 1985 and 1992.
It starred Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty as Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia. The quartet introduces themselves to the space with menu items, framed photos and even ‘Blanche’s Room’, a recreation of their space that is sure to be a popular photographic backdrop.
He added that similar events coincide well not only gold girls audience, but with the themes and themes addressed in the program. “When we decided to open, we knew it would be something that would generate a lot of excitement, but we had no idea how important the show was to so many people,” said Lederman. “Many fans have reached out to say it was their first time watching the show or praised how it tackled so many controversial topics. We are incredibly proud to have made this a very inclusive restaurant and we think this is the perfect time to invite everyone to a great experience.”
The restaurant, run by executive chef Royce Burke of Dino’s Famous Chicken and Secret Lasagna pop-up, is open Wednesday through Sunday and is described as quick casual with an emphasis on desserts. For each ticket purchased (prices start at $39 for a total of 75 seats), guests receive a reserved seat, a 90-minute dinner window, an entry option, and a slice of cheesecake (chocolate, strawberry, pumpkin or Oreo). Menu items include Sophia’s Al Forno Lasagna (beef or vegan), Lanai: a Miami-Style Cuban Sandwich, Blanche’s Georgia-Style Biscuit, Bacon Salad Potato Sandwich, and more.
Additional items and local delivery are available for a la carte purchase, with specials including custom cocktails to be released at a later date. The Beverly Hills location, in a space that was once occupied by the Bedford & Burns restaurant, also features products from aprons to coffee mugs. It is the first to open its doors with more Golden Girls Kitchens planned for New York, Miami, San Francisco and Chicago.
Lederman is quick to credit Burke and Derek Berry, director of experience at Bucket Listers, who previously ran rising fans Saved by Max, Good Burger and The Peach Pit. “We didn’t want to use it,” Lederman said of the offers. “We wanted real, amazing food and we paid a lot of attention to detail, from the playlist to the things you see everywhere. All thanks to Derek Berry, who has an incredible track record of doing it in a very authentic way. It really makes you feel like you’re on the show.”
Amid the pandemic, many viewers said they are returning to comforting content and favorite shows like gold girlsLederman said now is a good time to start the kitchen experience, especially after Betty White’s death in December. “It was incredibly important to Disney that we do something sooner or later. It’s a show that has stood the test of time and is truly one of the few timeless classics,” Lederman said of the show, now broadcast on Disney’s Hulu. It was the perfect time to not only be in Los Angeles, but also in other cities later this year.”
