You are watching your favorite Canadian sitcom, cartakennythe other Day when you ask yourself, Wait … who is Ron and which Dax?
Hulu’s exclusive series that satirizes rural life in the Great White North has one of the most unique sets of any current sitcom. In fact, each character has enough fascinating quirks and hilarious memorable qualities that are all easily distinguishable from each other … well, with the exception of the two members of the cartakenny cast which we will talk about in this article.
Even hardcore fans of the sitcom, which recently premiered its first live-action spin-off, it costs, on Hulu, they often have a hard time distinguishing the two married sparring partners. I admit that despite their disparate physical characteristics, each time I have mentioned them in an article on cartakennyI had to rely on internet searches to confirm that James Daly is Ron (aka “Ronzy”) and Gregory Waters plays Dax (aka “Daxy”).
Apparently it’s a problem that even Jacob Tierney, who co-created cartakenny with actor Wayne Jared Keeso and who also plays Glen, the local pastor’s employee who listens to MoD3an. The actor and director was recently interviewed by uh on the show’s Slow Cooker success story, and when asked about characters from the past he would like to bring back, he said this:
There are enough of them. I can barely put them in a fucking frame. [Laughs] I don’t want any more actors; I have enough. I hardly know who Reilly is and who Jonesy is. I don’t know who Dax is and who Ron is.
So not only does Tierney struggle to tell Dax from Ron, but she also faces the same problem in identifying her gym buddies, Reilly (Dylan Playfair) and Jonesy (Andrew Herr). Interestingly, this mirrors a recurring gag on the show that Wayne often doesn’t remember (or, perhaps, refuses) to remember the names of best friends who play hockey.
EW writer Tyler Aquilina later reveals that he also doesn’t know who they are when Dax and Ron are on screen. This elicits the following response from Tierney, jokingly stating that Daly and Waters may not have a clue:
I don’t think they know! I think they learn both lines and then flip a coin to see who says what.
Think about it more and remember the best cartakenny episodes, I often can’t distinguish between another pair of sparring partners named Tyson and Joint Boy, played by Jay Bertin and Joel Gagne respectively. I also tend to forget if Sash Striga is the one playing Aly and Nadine Bhabha playing her friend Bianca, or vice versa (the former turned out to be correct). Finally, I remember a moment when I really wondered if I was looking at Wayne’s French-Canadian ex-girlfriend, Marie-Frédérique (Magalie Lépine Blondeau), when she was really Kim Cloutier in the role of ‘Anik, the former French-Canadian of Daryl girlfriend. (Nathan Dales).
Fortunately, I guess it doesn’t always matter if we end up seeing double with one of these characters because in most cases they come in a pack, especially Ronzy and Daxy. Maybe someday, if the creators want to make it easier for fans to solve this puzzle, it would help to choose the couple as the star of their spin-off. I’d give it a 10-4 Texas size.
