The world of Middle-earth is closer than ever to TV thanks to Amazon Prime power ringsbut its Second Age setting doesn’t mean it will be a Peter Jackson prequel. the Lord of the Rings Film trilogy in the third age. While characters like Galadriel and Elrond have roles in the series (and appeared in the latest big trailer ), they will not be the same versions that appeared in the films and the director said he was reluctant to contribute to the project. Amazon takes a different view of the situation.
What Peter Jackson said about the rings of power
The the Lord of the Rings The films were epic when they were released between 2001 and 2003 and became iconic over the next two decades. The Hobbit The trilogy proved that Peter Jackson could bring his magic touch of Middle-earth back in time to adventures set before the founding of the Company, so it was natural for fans to wonder if Amazon power rings it would have something to do with the movies … or with Jackson himself. Jackson recently appeared on Podcast of talk about the Hollywood Reporters Awards (opens in a new tab)and after confirming that he would see the new program, he shared:
They asked me if I wanted to be there from the start and I said, “It’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script. … They said: “As soon as we have the first scripts, we will send them to you for you to watch.” And the scripts never appeared. [laughs] It’s the last one I’ve heard.
Jackson went on to say that “he has nothing to complain about” and that “it’s a cause for celebration” if someone makes a good TV show or a good movie, because making movies “is pretty hard”. She also shared that she hoped to “really see him as a perfectly neutral spectator” when she never had the experience so many others have had when it came to seeing her. the Lord of the Rings Movie). To hear Peter Jackson say it, he was a ghost but he’s not mad about it.
How Amazon responded to Peter Jackson’s comments
Amazon wasted no time with a response to what Peter Jackson said about thinking that at some point they would at least send him the scripts for power rings. With the premiere of the show (which voices from 2017 Before the streamer made a big commitment ) less than two months ago, Amazon Studios issued a statement a THR :
In pursuing the rights to our show, we were forced to keep the series distinct and separate from the films. We have the utmost respect for the Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings films and are thrilled that you can’t wait to see The Rings of Power.
This statement is in line with 2018 reports that Amazon was contacting Peter Jackson (among others) about the show , but no official announcement was ever made. Amazon’s clarification that they were “forced” to keep the series and the films separate is particularly intriguing in light of alleged sources (cited by THR) which claim that the legacy of author JRR Tolkien (died 1973) opposed the Jackson’s involvement in power rings. Amazon paid this domain $ 250 million for the rights to do the show.
Tolkien’s state that he did not want Peter Jackson to be involved in an adaptation would not be surprising, in light of the comments made about the the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Christopher Tolkien, the late author’s son, had done so some unflattering comments on how the films “gutted” the source material . As it stands, the upcoming series won’t be set in the same universe as Jackson’s films, but the director is hoping to see the new adaptation of Tolkien’s world, and it’s definitely not the only one.
The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power opens Friday 2 September for viewers with an Amazon Prime subscription . If you still need viewing options for the remaining weeks before your return trip to Middle-earth, check out our Program of the first TV 2022 !
