Based on the work of Jonathan Larson, an independent show reaches her last week on display with sold out sessions
Tick, Tick … Boom! Tell the story of Jona young composer in the 1990s, with the ambition of writing the greatest musical of that decade. Written by Jonathan Larsonproduction is inspired by the author’s own wishes, responsible for Rentwho passed away before witnessing that, in fact, he had created one of the greatest musicals of the 1990s.
Timeless, the work talks to those who still dare to dream, as happened with LIN-MANUEL MIRANDAauthor of musicals Hamiltonand In a neighborhood of New Yorkwhich took Tick, Tick … Boom! for theaters in 2021, with Andrew Garfield(Spider-Man: No return home) – Another theater lover – in the role of Jon.
Four years later, a group of young actors from Rio de Janeiro decided to bet on the inspiring power of Larson To set up a new version of the play and, more than a year after planting the idea, it starts to bear fruit: starring MATHEUS GOOD, Camille Dutra, Pedro Balu and Diego Montez, Tick, Tick … Boom! It approaches the end of its first season at the Solar Theater of Botafogo, in the south of Rio, with sold out sessions and, especially, the mass approval of the public.
“The world calls, it is now or never again”
The idea for the show came up almost by accident. Used to studying group texts, Tick, Tick… Boom! emerged as one of the options, suggested by Pedro Baluone of the interpreters of Michaelbest friend of Jon: “It was so cool to read, so, we thought, ‘Does it go forward? Does this have a future’”?remember MATHEUS GOOD in conversation with Rolling Stone Brazil.
The idea gained strength when the group noticed that despite the success of the film LIN-MANUEL MIRANDAwhich won the Golden Globe and was even nominated for Oscarother artists had not yet had an interest in bringing the piece back to the Brazilian stages:
“The movie is 2021 and it is very crazy that it had not yet come after him. Okay [lançado] In the middle of the pandemic, but I swore that in the following years someone was going to bring and did not come. So, we said, ‘Dude, we have to enjoy this moment, because the movie gave a bigger name for the title’ “account Matheus.
Of a remote possibility, Tick, Tick… Boom! was gaining body: “There are things that we think are impossible to happen, or that they are far from reality, and sometimes they are not so far away.”reflects.
Friends then contacted the Music Theater Internationalholding the rights of the works of Jonathan Larsonand soon everything “It was very real and realized in front of us”remember. “It was very nice to see this process come out of a dream, a joke even, to become a real and concrete thing. That we really materialize. It was very cool.”

“Shoes breaking, your time is passing …”
However, the group took almost two years to take Tick, Tick… Boom! of the idea and take it to the stage. Second Matheusthe plans appeared at the end of 2023, the acquisition of copyright occurred in March 2024, the announcement of the new assembly came in October of the same year and the debut almost a year later, in August 2025. And the process was not easy:
“We were afraid to announce our faces, because we are still more strangers than known in the market. And we think a lot about making a teaser that would not show our faces, to be something more mysterious and generate a fan, ‘my God, who will do?’account.
In the end, the group decided to be opened with those interested – “Even not to generate a break in expectations” – And the fan response ended up surprising Matheus and the others: “The reception was very positive. We saw people posting, commenting on Instagram, replacing the stories, and going to other social networks, on Twitter, Tiktok. It was a surprise to see such a positive reception.”confesses the actor.
And even with the long time from the ad to the debut of the play, the enthusiasm did not die: “Making an independent production is difficult. We always have mishaps on the way and things end up a little. So we were very impressed with how well we were received, even with this time longing.”adds.
“It was very comforting to know that people were with us and wanted to watch the show, they were curious to see what was going out. The support gave us a lot of strength to continue”complete Matheus.

“How will you follow?”
After the initial nervousness, it was time to bring to life Tick, Tick … Boom!. MATHEUS GOOD, Pedro Balu and Caio Loureiromusical director of the show, were based on the version of Bruno Narchi and Thiago Machado – Veterans of the musical theater, who set up Tick, Tick … Boom! for the first time in São Paulo, in 2018 – but the task for Matheus It was a little more complicated: to give life to Jona version of itself Jonathan Larson.
“It’s a dream role. It’s wonderful. I love the text, I love the songs and I really wanted to be there doing it. But at the same time, I was very afraid, because it’s a great responsibility”confess. “Despite being a semi -biographical piece, it is a role that cannot have the influence of the true person, the icon that was the Jonathan Larson. And there was also the movie, which was something that put me concern. “
Matheus says he could only find his version of Jon When he left his own head and tried to bring his own experience in the theater with that of his character: “He’s similar to me in many places, so let’s try to mix fiction with reality and try to bring some of me to this character. After all, there’s a little of him in all of us, who are artists. It was a nice process to try to undress my vanity, to try to follow a similar path with what they did before and find a path that worked for me.”complete.

Despite the individual work for the construction of the character, Matheus confesses that if it were not for the work and commitment of all those involved in the production of Tick, Tick … Boom!the show might have been only in the idea:
“If it wasn’t for Camille of Susanthe Pedro and the Diego of Michaelthe girls, Luiza [Lewicki], Julia [Varga[ e Marcela [Pires]driving, the John [Ferreira]our direction assistant … if it weren’t for all these people working together and working with me, we would not have come to the result that we arrived “it says. “I can only be extremely grateful to all the wonderful people who are there working with us and who, in the end, lent a little of themselves to create Jon, this figure that is as a soul of the artist present in all of us.”
“I am very flattered to be able to continue this legacy, to spread the message that this piece brings, which is to enjoy the time you have, to make the best you can do with the resources you have and follow your dreams.complete Matheus.
