First -time director, the artist signs the independent adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s work, who reaches her last week on Rio

Tick, Tick … Boom! Tell the story of Jona young composer in the 1990s, with the ambition to create the greatest musical of that decade. Written by Jonathan Larsonproduction is inspired by the author’s own wishes, responsible for Rentwho passed away before witnessing that, in fact, he had created one of the greatest musicals of the 1990s.

Timeless, the work talks to those who still dare to dream, as happened with LIN-MANUEL MIRANDAauthor of musicals Hamiltonand In a neighborhood of New Yorkwhich took Tick, Tick … Boom! for theaters in 2021, with Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man: No return home) – Another theater lover – in the role of Jon.

Four years later, a group of young actors from Rio de Janeiro decided to bet on the inspiring power of Larson To set up a new version of the play and, more than a year after planting the idea, it starts to bear fruit: starring MATHEUS GOOD, Camille Dutra, Pedro Balu and Diego Montezand under the direction of Luiza Lewicki, Julia Varga and Marcela Pires, Tick, Tick … Boom! It approaches the end of its first season at the Solar Theater of Botafogo, in the south of Rio, with sold out sessions and, especially, the mass approval of the public.

Director by chance

Initially, Luiza Lewicki joined the play as a substitute for Susanthe girlfriend of Joninterpreted by Camille Dutra. However, about a month and a half before Tick, Tick … Boom! Reaching the stage in early August, the director left the play and they had to start over from scratch:

“It had to be a quick, cost-effective choice that would bring quality and time, and asked me to take the direction. And I ended up assuming. And I invited the Movement Directors, which are the Julia and the Marcelato sign the direction with me too “account Luiza In an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil.

Tick, Tick … Boom! It is a piece that could not be built piece by piece, like a Frankenstein monster. I built a number, and then I came and built a scene, and then they came and built a number. No, it’s one thing. We saw that, to build the play, it had to be together “justifies.

The sudden change, of course, forced the directors to work intensively in the new version of the play, as the former director prohibited the use of any idea of his own: “We couldn’t stand to see each other anymore”jokes Luiza.

The effort, however, was to maintain the veracity of the piece and ensure that it would work with viewers: Tick, Tick … Boom! It is a very true piece and we wanted to respect this, for the public to be able to connect “account. In this respect, the collaboration of the actors was fundamental:

“We set up almost together, because we brought the skeleton and the actors came in with the content. Which got better, what was more beautiful, more sincere. Because that’s what makes sense, emotional and bodily.”explains.

Fundamental was also the vote of confidence that the whole team gave her and her colleagues in the mission: “At no point, they judged us or went against a decision of ours, gave us no voice. All the time, they were welcoming, put strength in us. They asked what we preferred, what we wanted. They never treated us different from how they would treat a director of years. And that was very special.”

Unshakable confidence

Even with the setbacks, Luiza It states that, from the beginning, it has always believed a lot in the project and knew that Tick, Tick … Boom! It was going to work: “We really wanted this musical to happen. We really wanted to work out, because we have been a large group of friends for years. I am even thrilled, because my best friends are in this project.”account.

“We are all actors and artists that we are always wanting to pierce a bubble that is very difficult to pierce. And then we come across the Tick, Tick … Boom!which is a story about choices, about chasing and we decide to set up a piece from scratch. If the big producers do not accept, we will be successful for ours “complete the artist.

And your trust turned out to be justified: “It’s been years old and a week before the premiere, it’s always crazy. The sound equipment doesn’t arrive, the light equipment doesn’t arrive, the band doesn’t come, it delays everything … and it’s impressive how, in Tick, Tick … Boom!everything went well. We managed to make a schedule with clearance. [O deus do teatro] Dionysus It’s with us, guys “jokes.

“My bond with Tick, Tick … Boom! Now it’s lifelong “

To Luiza Lewickiwho came across the work of Jonathan Larson through Rentlike so many other artists and theater fans, its story is now eternally linked to that of the artist: Tick, Tick … Boom! It is about a race against time that, especially us artists, and our generation, live. This pressure to be successful before 30, before a certain age “punctuates.

“It’s about choices, it’s about dreams. So make this piece, which has this message, and be my first signature as director, and doing it all, a very cool thing, independently, it’s very important. Tick, Tick … Boom! Now it’s lifelong. Marked my story “complete the artist.
