Nicholas Evans, author of ‘Horse Whisper’, dies at 72

Nicholas Evans, bestselling British novelist horse whisperHe died at age 72, his representatives announced on Monday.

United Agents said Evans died “unexpectedly” on August 9 of a heart attack.

Published in 1995, horse whisper it was Evans’ first novel and sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The story of an injured teenager and the trainer hired to nurse his horse back to health was adapted into a Hollywood film starring Robert Redford and Scarlett Johansson as young jockey Grace McLean.

Evans, born in 1950 in Worcestershire, England, studied law at the University of Oxford and worked as a journalist in the 1970s.

He worked as a screenwriter and producer for television documentaries before starting work on his first novel. His other books include The loop, the smoke jumper, the split s Angry.

In 2008, Evans became seriously ill after cooking and eating poisonous mushrooms collected in Scottish forests. He and his family were taken to the hospital and need kidney treatment.
