Sheldon Mittleman, who served as MCA/Universal’s in-house attorney for more than two decades, died Sunday night in Los Angeles of natural causes, a family spokesperson said. He was 89 years old.
After starting his legal career at Screen Gems, Mittleman was appointed in-house counsel at MCA/Universal in the early 1970s, where he worked with Lou Wasserman and Sid Sheinberg in the mid-1990s.
When Seagram Co. acquired the company in 1995, Mittleman moved to Universal Television’s business and legal affairs group. He retired in the late 1990s, but later took over as head of business and legal affairs for Steven Bochco Productions.
Born in Chicago on August 31, 1932, Mittleman graduated from UCLA with a BA in 1953 and earned a law degree from the school in 1958. In 1954-56, he served as a lieutenant in the US Air Force. JAG body.
Mittleman represented MCA/Universal in negotiations with several unions and, in retirement, was often called upon as an expert or consultant due to his deep understanding of union contracts.
He survived by his son, David (and his wife, Lisa); daughter Susan (and her husband John); and grandchildren Andrew and Lauren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 am at Groman Eden Mortuary & Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills.
