Premium cable has been updated chi, created by Lena Waithe, for the sixth season. The pick-up comes just weeks before the show’s fifth season finale, which will premiere on Showtime’s streaming platforms on September 2 and air on September 4.
Set in Chicago, the drama, filmed entirely in the Windy City by 20th Television, follows a group of South Siders who are connected by chance but united by the need for connection and redemption. The current season focuses on the joys and trials of black love, discussing relationships, parenting, and society.
chi is Showtime’s second longest running series behind billion (which completed six seasons and was renewed for a seventh). A statement from ViacomCBS says chiThe streaming audience, which makes up the vast majority of its total viewers, grew by more than 20% last season, although, as is often the case with streaming data, Showtime is withholding specific numbers. The show’s fourth season averaged 4.2 million weekly viewers across all platforms, Showtime said, with its first season accounting for less than 10% of that total.
