In an open letter, Jonah Hill said he no longer wanted to promote his films as an actor or director to end his anxiety attacks.
Days after Tom Holland announced he was taking a break from social media to take care of himself, it’s Jonah Hill’s turn to discuss his mental health. in an open letter published by DeadlineThe actor and director has announced that he has decided not to promote his upcoming films because exercise is causing him anxiety attacks, which he now wants to get rid of.
“I finished shooting my second film, a documentary called Stutz about me and my therapist, which explores mental health in general.Jonah Hill writes. “The goal of this film is to showcase therapy and the tools it provides to a wide audience in an entertaining story.
The journey of self-discovery I undertook for this film led me to realize that I had suffered from anxiety attacks for nearly 20 years, exacerbated by media appearances and public events.
I am so excited that the film is having its world premiere at the prestigious Fall Festival and I look forward to sharing it with audiences around the world, hoping that it will help those who are struggling.
However, you won’t see me there promoting the film, nor for my subsequent films, as I’m keeping this important step aside to protect myself. If I made myself worse by going out to promote it, I wouldn’t be true to the film or to myself.
I usually cringe at emails or announcements like this, but I also understand that I’m one of the privileged few who can take time for myself. I’m not going to lose my job working on my anxiety.
With this letter and the next Stutz, I hope to make it more normal to talk about it and act on it. So people can take steps to feel better and understand their issues more clearly.
I hope my work speaks for itself and I am very grateful to my colleagues, business partners and everyone who reads this for their understanding and support.”
In addition to Stutz, Jonah Hill is expected in the comedy You People, which he co-wrote and in which he will answer to Eddie Murphy, David Duchovny and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Two feature films will be released on Netflix on as-yet-undisclosed dates.
