Actress sues ‘Terrifier’ producers for being deceived in franchise profit deal

Catherine Corcoran accuses producers of fraud and abuse in an agreement that provided for 1% of the profits of the franchise, which has already raised around US$100 million

Catherine Corcoranactress of the first Terrifier (2016), filed a lawsuit against the film’s producers alleging that she had been deceived in an agreement that provided for 1% of the profits from the entire franchise. According to the actress, the agreement was never fulfilled; so far, she would have only received about $8,300.

The lawsuit, filed last Sunday (27) in the Federal Court of California, accuses the producers Damien Leone (also director) and Phil Falcone of breach of contract, fraud and sexual harassment, in addition to violating SAG union rules for nude scenes without written consent.

Corcoran states that, during filming of the famous sequence in which her character is sawed in half while hanging upside down, she was not informed that she would appear completely naked. The actress also says that the set imposed exhausting working conditions: the scene, recorded over ten hours, required her to remain suspended for 40 seconds straight, which would have caused cranial swelling and damage to the eardrum, according to her doctor.

The actress’ lawyer, Devin McRae, stated in the lawsuit that “Without Corcoran’s willingness to bet on the project and accept compensation tied to profits, the series wouldn’t even exist”. He accuses the producers of having taken advantage of a young artist at the beginning of her career to make a low-budget film viable — and, later, “betrayed her when it came time to pay what they owed”.

The lawyers of Leone and Falcone deny the accusations. “Damien and Phil reject the allegations made in the lawsuit and will vigorously defend themselves,” attorney Larry Zerner said in a statement.
