Warner Bros. Discovery will launch British television company GB News a year later.

Warner Bros. Discovery will sell its stake in GB News, the UK news channel launched in June 2021 as a right-wing alternative to the BBC and ITV News.

Discovery was an early investor in GB News, which suffered from a series of problems and low ratings in its early weeks, eventually losing chairman Andrew Neil after a very public backlash.

“Following the merger between Discovery and WarnerMedia earlier this year, our portfolio now includes several proprietary news brands, including CNN Worldwide, TVN Group in Poland and Newshub in New Zealand. In light of this and our ongoing assessment of our global and local investment portfolio, we are exiting our investment in GB News and are no longer a shareholder,” said Warner Bros. in a statement.

“Discovery was one of the first organizations to invest in GB News, made by Warner Bros. before Discovery was created. GB News has built a growing and loyal audience in its first year, giving British news broadcast another voice and we wish management and shareholders every success in their future endeavors.

After leaving GB News, Neil told the BBC he felt like a “minority of one” on the network.

“There were more and more differences between myself and other top executives and the board,” he said, adding that he left the channel because he didn’t want to be part of “Fox News from Britain.”
