“The Tony Award-winning production of Second Stage was one of the loudest productions of the spring season, and its limited run was too short to capture interest and ticket demand,” said producer Barry Weissler. “Having been a huge fan of the play since it debuted in 2004, we were amazed at how relevant and timely it continues to be. Richard Greenberg brilliantly uses America’s favorite pastime to expose and explore the prejudices that divide us, but strikes the perfect balance between being fun and enlightening.”
The play officially opened on April 4, after a delay of nearly two years due to the pandemic shutdown on Broadway. It also sparked an argument over the safety of the cast onstage and the audience’s respect for the show’s policies after someone challenged the application for a second-stage Yondr Scholarship and posted a photo of Williams during one of the show’s nude scenes online. .
