The McAllen, Texas church which produced many unauthorized and altered performances by Lin-Manuel Miranda hamilton apologised.
In a statement posted to Instagram on Tuesday, according to Roman Gutierrez, pastor of The Door Christian Fellowship Church, the ministry issued a formal apology to Miranda. hamiltonproducers and “many others who contributed their intellectual property hamilton.”
The statement said the church had not taken “any legal steps” to obtain a license to perform the musical, which is copyrighted under federal law. The apology came about three weeks after the parish and RVG Productions held multiple performances of the record-breaking Broadway musical on Aug.
In the apology, Gutierrez, whose name was not identified, confirmed that the church’s performances were unauthorized and violated “copyright and copyright in many ways.” The statement says the church “will never perform a performance again and will destroy all video or audio recordings and images of unauthorized performances or rehearsals and urges all our members to do the same.” The statement also acknowledges that the exchange “reimburses damages for our actions.”
“Carrie Christian Fellowship McAllen Church has not requested or obtained a license from the producers or breeders. hamilton manufacture, installation, reproduction or modification of any part hamilton; We also did not have prior permission to alter Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work by altering the music, lyrics, removing music and adding dialogue,” the statement said.
Gutiérrez said the experience will be “an opportunity to learn about protected artistic works and intellectual property.”
The apology follows Miranda’s public statement on August 11, after the Dramatists Guild condemned McAllen’s reproduction of Church without permission and his decision to do so “with altered lyrics and text added without permission”.
“We are grateful to everyone who has spoken out against this illegal and unauthorized production. Now lawyers are doing their job,” Miranda said in a tweet. “And eternally grateful to @dramatistsguild who has the support of writers everywhere, whether it’s her first play or her fiftieth.”
McAllen Church performed a modified version of the musical twice, on August 5 and 6. The first performance was live and the second under instructions not to take pictures or videos.
Clips from the play show scenes from the unoriginal musical where the characters confess and repent before the “Lord and Savior”. Later sermons on the program suggested that being gay was a sin and something an individual could “fight”.
In a statement made during the performances, a representative for the musical said that the production had no knowledge of the production and that the musical does not grant amateur or professional licenses for any theatrical performances.
