This summer, Stephen King fans received some really tough news. While writer / director Gary Dauberman sales lot (based on King’s book of the same name) was due out in time for this year’s Halloween season, the film was first postponed to April 2023 and then removed entirely from the 2023 film release schedule. Warner Bros. decides to settle for the film, but for now regular readers can be excited as Netflix has announced the release date of what will now be Stephen King’s next adaptation: John Lee Hancock. Mr. Harrigan’s phone.
Netflix has announced the official release dates of all of its films that will be released by the end of December and among the big titles such as Blond, Enola Holmes 2 Yes Glass onion: a mystery at loggerheads this is Mr. Harrigan’s phone. The film, protagonist THIS ISJaden Martell and Donald Sutherland arrive on the subscription streaming service on October 5th.
Mr. Harrigan’s phone is based on the novel of the same name, which appears in Stephen King’s 2020 omnibus if it bleeds. The story centers on a teenager named Craig (Jaeden Martell), who lives in a small town called Harlow, Maine. He gets a part-time job by helping his wealthy elderly neighbor, proprietor Mr. Harrigan (Donald Sutherland), and the two form close friendships. Harrigan celebrates their friendship by sending Craig a raffle ticket four times a year, and when the protagonist wins a lot of money on one of the scratch cards, he uses a portion to buy his first iPhone from his employer.
Harrigan is fascinated by the device and his relationship with the machine becomes supernatural after his death. In his grief, Craig continues to text the old man after he’s on the grave, and Harrigan ends up doing more than just responding to the messages.
Mr. Harrigan’s phone features an All-Star cast this also includes Joe Tippett as Craig’s father and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Mrs Hargensen, Craig’s teacher.
This will be the third time a Stephen King adaptation has been produced exclusively on Netflix. The streaming service has already produced Mike Flanagan’s brilliant film Gerald’s game (one of the best Stephen King movies of all time) in 2017, and in 2019 fans appreciated Vincenzo Natali in the tall grassbased on the tale of the same name by King and his son Joe Hill.
Stephen King joked that he saw a first cut of Mr. Harrigan’s phone in early August, and praised the film, calling it “nothing but genius”. It certainly raised our hopes, given the high level of King adaptations we’ve seen over the years.
