CNN White House correspondent John Harwood is leaving the cable news channel, it was announced Friday.
“[L]Can’t wait to see what comes next,” Harwood tweeted after noting that Friday would be his last day on the network.
“We appreciate John’s work in the White House and wish him the best of luck,” a spokesperson told CNN. the hollywood reporter.
It’s still unclear what prompted the departure, though Harwood still has plenty of time left on his multi-year contract.
A source familiar with the matter said Harwood learned of CNN’s decision last month.
Harwood joined CNN in January 2020 from CNBC, where she was the lead correspondent in Washington. On both CNBC and CNN, Harwood has earned a reputation for harshly criticizing President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which he described as “fundamentally broken” in 2019.
And he continues to analyze and criticize the “broken” state of politics since Biden took office. In a prime-time speech Thursday night, Biden attacked “MAGA Republicans” as a threat to America’s democratic values.
“Biden’s assertion that Trump and extremist Republicans are a threat to American democracy is unquestionably true,” Harwood later said.
In one of his closing speeches on Friday morning, Harwood added that “it’s not easy for us as journalists to say.”
“We are raised to believe that there are two different political parties with different views, and we do not take sides because of honest differences between them. But that’s not what we’re talking about,” he said. “This is not an honest disagreement. “The GOP is now run by a rogue demagogue.”
Harwood is CNN’s second major departure in recent weeks. CNN canceled the Sunday show last month. reliable sources and split from his co-anchor and chief media correspondent for CNN, Brian Stelter.
After you reliable sources Cancel, THR The CNN team would be interested in more potential changes. Harwood is unlikely to be the last CNN correspondent to leave in the next few months, as CNN’s new chief executive Chris Licht is expected to review various parts of the network’s programming.
Of course, exits are just one piece of the puzzle. These are the new hires and programming that will help shape CNN’s future under Licht, and those decisions have yet to be made.
