Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, or for that matter Call Jesus. save your soulLike the first lady of the Southern Baptist megachurch trying to reclaim her rightful throne.
The satirical comedy opens simultaneously in theaters today (just in time for National Film Day tomorrow) and online on Peacock. Executive produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, the film stars Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown as Trinity and Lee-Curtis Childs, married megachurch leaders who have served tens of thousands of congregations. After the scandal, the pair are trying to reopen their church and “make the biggest comeback the commodity religion has ever seen,” according to the paper.
Nicole Behar, Confidence, Austin Krut, Confidence, Devereux Rogers, Robert Yatta and Greta Glenn also star in the film, which marks the directorial debut of identical twins Adama and Adan Ebo and is inspired by the 2018 Adama short of the same name. Peele’s collaborator and recent cover star Daniel Kaluuya (of his 59% Productions) is on the production team.
Brown said at the movie’s purple carpet premiere last month the hollywood reporter that it was “exhausting” to delve into comedy with such a tight shooting schedule.
“It was a quick but thorough shoot, nearly six to nine pages shot every day,” says Brown. “But I had a great partner on stage [in Regina]And I love my directors and the production team. I felt supported so that whatever I wanted to do or try was right. There was freedom to play every day. Whenever you feel like you have the freedom to play, that’s the best environment you can be in.”
Says director Adam: “It was liberating to tackle something that isn’t necessarily new, but to do it in a way that I think a lot of people haven’t. In a way that allows us to come to terms with where we are in our own faith and how we feel about our involvement in organized religion.”
Writer Adana adds, “I think what we want the audience to take away from this is that they’re always asking questions… questioning everything.”
