The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) will open on October 24 with Takahisa Zeze’s post-war drama. Fragments of Last Willand Oliver Bill Hermanus Life, The retelling of the Akira Kurosawa classic will end on November 2nd.
Takahisa’s film, based on true events, tells the story of the Japanese POW he plays, who struggles to keep hope for himself and his fellow prisoners in a Siberian gulag after his nation’s defeat in 1945. Fragments of Last Will The stars are Kazunari Ninomiya, former member of boy band Arashi.
Life The action takes place in Great Britain in 1952, the same year as Kurosawa. ikiru, on which it is based, came out. Bill Nighy stars as a tough bureaucrat who is inspired to change his life after receiving shocking news.
“Life is the story of an ordinary man, reduced to a dreary existence by years of oppressed work routine, who at the last moment tries to turn his monotonous life into something wonderful, something that can be said to have been lived before.” Complete,” said Shozo Ichiyama, TIFF’s director of programming.
Written by British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, the film opened at Sundance this year and was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. The Japanese distribution will be handled by Toho, which released the original, inspired by the novel by Leo Tolstoy.
TIFF moved last year from its former base at the Roppongi Hills Complex in the Hibiya-Yurakucho-Ginza district, where it will move again this year. The festival is adding two more theaters to the neighboring Marunouchi neighborhood and is working more closely with local authorities and business organizations to strengthen ties with its new home.
