Robin Roberts says he almost refused to give then-President Barack Obama an interview about marriage equality in 2012, fearing he would be missed.

says Roberts on Monday Ellen DeGeneresShow That in 2012 – a year before going public – he was called to the White House for an interview with Obama.

They told him that “it was possible [he] He changed his stance on same-sex marriage. I still hadn’t publicly declared that I was gay and I was afraid that I wouldn’t introduce myself, that people would ask, “Why are you interviewing the president when he’s making this change in office?”

But he said he soon came to his senses.

It was like a scene moon shot: ‘Take it away from him; Robin, what do you think? It’s not up to you. That person will affect countless lives.’ And at that moment I said: “I will stop fearing the right to get in the way of what I want to do”.

Roberts said he was glad he changed his mind and it inspired him to open up about his long-term relationship with Amber Leigh.

“I’m happy to be here [interview with Obama]He told DeGeneres. “Right after that, I talked about Amber on Instagram or social media and how I was scared of Christianity that people would look at me differently. [But] Hug me. Again, if we stop and think about how many times we’ve allowed fear to be on our side, I’m really, really glad it’s not that way anymore. I’m not going to get everything I want in life and I’m not going to get everything, but of course fear won’t be the reason I won’t get it. ”

Roberts, who is promoting her new book, Brighter by day: Awakening to new hopes and dreams, Urging others not to be afraid to show who they really are.

“All editions are limited,” he said, adding, “I mean, how many times [do] Are you attracted to people who you know are the real you? “It’s something that more and more people are learning, and I’m grateful for that.”

In an interview with DeGeneres, Roberts also explains Laig’s breast cancer diagnosis and reveals that he was a bus driver when he was in high school.
